Timeline:

  • On August 15, 2025, UCLA Filed Public Records Act requests to UCLA campus and UCOP seeking a copy of the document sent by the U.S. Department of Justice that, according to a University of California press release, demanded that the University of California pay $1 billion to the federal government
  • On August 19, 2025, UCOP General Counsel denied Public Records Act request, citing pending litigation.
  • On September 15, 2025, CUCFA and UCLA Faculty Association filed a Petition for Alternative Write of Mandate Under the Public Record Act and an ex-parte application to make the document public and expedite relief.
  • On September 19, 2025, the Court held an ex-parte hearing.
  • On October 6, 2025 Court ordered an in camera review of the settlement document.
  • On October 14, 2025, the State Superior Court issued an order and judgement granting Petition for Writ of Mandate.
  • On October 20, 2025, Regents request a Stay of the trial court’s decision in the Court of Appeal of the State of California.
